Jazz Day Concert Slated for Pompey Square in May

NASSAU, The Bahamas — “Jazz is more than a musical art form but rather an affirmation of our ability to peacefully collaborate and cooperate in spite of profound differences,” said Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson during a press conference to announce festivities related to the third annual International Jazz Day in The Bahamas and fifth celebrated by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

Held by The Bahamas National Commission for UNESCO at the National Arts Gallery Monday, April 18, in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture the conference was used to disclose that the day would be observed Monday, May 2, instead of April 30, which will be used to observe the iconic long-standing Bahamian event, the Red Cross Fair.

Held in Pompey Square the event is free to the general public.

The opening ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by continuous music from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Noted Bahamian Saxophonist Ralph Munnings from Grand Bahama will be recognized for his invaluable contribution to The Bahamian music industry and will star as the featured performer during the opening ceremony, a press release stated.

“From 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. the square comes alive,” Minister Johnson said, “with the pulsating sounds of young Bahamian high school and college musicians.

From 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. music will be provided under the stars by some of The Bahamas’ finest jazz musicians such as Doc’s Melody Makers; Brett Blackman; the Jazz Cats; Leo Jones; Brothers Love; Vice Versa; The Band Quartz; CariBah and Ambasah.”

Minister Johnson invited the public to this free, all-day event.
